Today, January 13, is Korean American Day, a celebration and recognition of the Korean American community’s contributions to US culture and society.
The observance of Korean American Day was made official by the US Congress in 2005, after President George W. Bush issued a proclamation on January 13, 2003, marking the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Koreans to the United States in 1903.
The United States has the largest South Korean population living outside of Korea, according to the Migration Policy Institute, with the largest Korean American populations in southern California and New York. Korean Americans make up the fifth largest Asian-American population group.
