Observing Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

Every year, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. The theme of this year’s month is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” a sentiment that reflects the trailblazing spirit of so many Hispanic Americans.

Unlike most months of recognition that begin on the 1st, Hispanic Heritage Month starts on the 15th because there are several different Latin American countries that celebrate their Independence Day around this time. For instance, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Mexico and Chile did the same on September 16 and 18, 1810, respectively. Additionally, Belize claimed independence on September 21, 1981, from Great Britain.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the culture of Latino and Hispanic communities all throughout the United States. We recognize their unique heritage and story, and the many valuable contributions those groups have made to our society and culture.
