In 2020, National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is especially significant considering the essential role truck drivers have played and will continue to play through the COVID-19 pandemic. Working long hours on the road and adapting to new conditions due to COVID-19 restrictions and regulations, truck drivers transport the essential goods that make it possible for front line workers to do their jobs as safely as possible and for families to find the products they need on store shelves.
There are an estimated one million professional men and women classified as light delivery or heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Industry Data from American Trucking Associations, the national trade association for the trucking industry, reports that nearly every good consumed in the US is put on a truck at some point. The trucking industry hauled 72.5% of all freight transported in the United States in 2019, equating to 11.84 billion tons.
