Korean Lunar New Year, or Seollal, falls on February 1 this year. Seollal, a major holiday in the lives of South Koreans, comes in January or February and marks the first day of the lunar calendar. The three-day period of celebrations for this important traditional Korean holiday begins on New Year’s Eve. It is a time of celebrating with family and showing respect to ancestors.

The start of this holiday traditional to South Korea and other east Asian countries is determined by the lunar calendar — the cycles of the moon’s phases — and takes place on the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, or the second new moon after the winter solstice.
