In terms of green technology and innovative eco-thinking in the logistics and supply chain industry, multiple industry sources have made predictions about future sustainability initiatives in warehousing and transportation.
In “5 warehousing sustainability trends for 2021,” FreightWaves summarized several predictions for the continued shift toward sustainable warehousing:
Automation
Technology and automation are doing more of the work in warehouses. Wearable devices, autonomous forklifts and electric vehicles are some examples of automation that can mean fewer accidents, increased efficiency and improved sustainability.
Optimal facility functions
Retrofitting old structures or building new green warehouses can result in LEED sustainability certifications. Measures such as more efficient lighting and HVAC systems, better insulation, energy management systems with sensors and timers can reduce the use of resources.
Location
When brick-and-mortar stores close, converting those mall spaces to warehouse distribution and fulfillment centers could be a sustainable transition. These locations are usually close to large numbers of consumers, and locating warehouses close to major ports, roads, airports and customers reduces the transportation needed in the distribution process.
Reduce, reuse and recycle
Switching to eco-friendly packaging, reusing containers and pallets, and recycling all materials like cardboard and metal are ways companies are reducing waste. Some companies like IKEA are committed to using only 100% circular materials and circular capabilities in their supply chain.
Renewable energy
Renewable energy sources including wind and solar are trending in a more affordable direction. Companies can experience significant savings in electricity bills and greenhouse gas emissions when they invest in renewable energy to power warehouses.
